Simple Alarm
I find it absolutely amazing how the more computers are supposed to simplify our lives, the less computers can actually do for you. Take for instance a reminder feature. You want to set an alarm for fifteen (15) minutes. You might be able to do that on your smart phone but doing that on a computer is pretty much impossible.
So I started looking into making one for myself - and this is the result.
So how does it work?
The first step is to determine when the alarm shall go off. You can choose one (1) of two (2) methods:
- You can pick a time in the future; using military time or the 24 hour format. (It needs to be within 24 hours and no colon is needed.)
- You can specify a number of minutes, up to 999 minutes. (16 hours and 39 minutes).
The second step is to write a message. This is meant to be a simple message like to turn off the oven or put the clothes in the dryer. The maximum is seventy (70) characters.
The third step is to specify which methods shall be utilized. There are four (4) methods, any or all of which can be used.
- Show a banner. A simple banner silently appears on top of the screen. The advantage of this is that it will not interrupt any work you are doing when it appears.
- Send a tone. This calls on Windows to send an audible tone
to signify that the time has arrived. This is useful in a full
screen game where other methods will pop you out of a game.
- Send three (3) beeps. For those systems without sound, this method uses the computer's internal speaker to generate the sound.
- Send a Pop-up Window. This is the most direct method.
- Endless Beeps. This
will sound random beeps and tones until a key is pressed. This is
useful for when you are away from your computer and do not want to miss
something important.
All these methods have a way of demonstrating how they work so you can choose which method work best for you.
There are two (2) customizable times and four (4) personalized message options which the user can set.
What about specialty versions?
You can use Runat to run a program at a certain time.
You can use Scheduled-Off (S-Off)
which contains several options for logging off
and turning off your computer.
