When Guild Wars 2 was released, we players had to pay to play the game. Then some time later, the game went to a free-to-play model. Many players took advantage of that to create secondary accounts for additional storage or to farm items or events. Both of us have our own accounts and we would use multiple computers to play – whether together or for real playing or just log in to get the dailies. In any case, it can be tedious to login in. Yes, there is the auto-login feature but that only applies for a single user. It does little for those who have multiple players in the same household or those who have multiple accounts. There needs to be a better way so I decided to try my hand at making such a utility.

So how does this work?

I’m glad you asked. As with most of my programs, there is no installation required. Just download and run.

Once Guild Wars 2 Login Assistant is run, the program will ask where Guild Wars 2 is. (Typically in C:\Games\Guild Wars 2) Then you select Init 1, 2 or 3 and enter username and password. Then select Log into Account 1, 2 or 3 and the program takes care of the rest.

Documentation

Init 1, 2 and 3. -These initialize user 1, 2 and 3. Just enter the Username and Password. These will be stored in an encrypted form on the hard drive.

Log into Account 1, 2 and 3. -These will load Guild Wars 2 and then enter the username and password corresponding with associated user.

Log into Last Used Account. - As you would expect, this option will launch Guild Wars 2 and log into the previous account. This information is stored by the game itself and not the login assistant.

Load GW. -This option merely launches Guild Wars 2. Useful for trying out GW2LA before giving credentials or for those updates which can be lengthy.

Reset Guild Wars 2 Settings. - There is an option within Guild Wars 2 to reset your settings. These would be a user’s preferred settings such as locations of various windows. This feature is included as a courtesy and will restore things to their default state.

Reset GW2 Login Assistant. - This option will remove the credentials stores on a user’s local hard drive and reset everything to the normal default state.

Run GW2 Diagnostic and Repair Guild Wars 2. - ArenaNet has included this utility within their game client as a means to self-check and repair any damage that is found. This is included as a courtesy and should be used when there is a major problem or when instructed to by ArenaNet Support.

Clean Up and Exit. - Exits the program.

A Note about Credentials, Account Security and Encryption

You have heard that you should never give your user name and password out to anyone. That is absolutely true. That piece of wisdom applies to whether it is a person or a piece of software.

Fortunately, ArenaNet has a couple of methods of mitigation that a user can use, even if the username and password get out of the user’s control. We recommend using these.

IP Address Permission

When this is enabled, only when GW2 is launched from that IP range will be allowed in. This feature alone drastically increase account security.

Unfortunately, this is only useful when one has a relatively static IP address.

Two-Factor Authentication

This is for those who have dynamic internet addresses. This option will send an SMS message to your hand-held computer – otherwise known as a smartphone – and you enter this code to log into the account. If someone tries to login with this feature on, the login will fail as they will not receive this SMS code - and you will know someone is trying to get into your account.

ArenaNet will give a gift of a Mini Mystical Dragon as an incentive to turn on this feature.
