Roller Beetles and You

Let’s face it: we were all pleasantly surprised when we were told that we were going to be getting a new mount with the release of Season 4 Episode 3 – Long Live the Lich.

Obtaining the roller beetle mount is not difficult to get. Do three (3) collections and you have it. No 250 gold sink. No 2,000 mithril ingots. Just do some events in Central Tyria, explore the Domain of Kourna.

Now the interesting question arises: what do we do with this mount? What problem does this solve?

One place to start is to look at the mount which is closest to the roller beetle and do a compare and contrast. The obvious answer to that would be the raptor. Both are fast. Both do small vertical jumps.

But there is one (1) major difference: A raptor starts off with its endurance bar full whereas the roller beetle starts with its endurance bar empty. This gives us a paradigm shift. While a raptor is quicker out of the gate, a roller beetle will easily catch up to a raptor. While this would make gathering runs ineffective, it would make map exploration much easier – especially in Central Tyria. It definitely will make the races around Divinity’s Reach very interesting.

So what is the bottom line? As we compose this, players are still obtaining their beetles, leveling them up and trying to discover the nuances of this mount. As you learn about your mount, you will also learn which situations are better suited for the raptor and others better suited for the beetle.

2020 Update:

A recent change by ArenaNet gave roller beetles a full endurance bar, just like every other mount. No waiting for the bar to fill which frustrated players and kept the beetle from being used.

However, the situation is still the same: The raptor is best for short quick travels, like for gathering runs and doing events. The beetle is best for quick map exploration and if one is really skilled, races.
